Tracking visitors with Google Analytics

Sorry to anyone who got a few old posts through from my blog last week. I've been playing with the Google Analytics code a bit and trying out new things, one of which is a way of tracking when people have come to my site after clicking a link in one of my feeds. I found an interesting article about campaign tagging which describes how to add extra query string parameters that Google Analytics will read and use to split up my statistics for me.

If you're adding my feed to an aggregator or a public listing please feel free to add a utm_source to the url so I can tell where people are coming from, as well as which type of feed they're coming from; I will pass through the utm_source to the links in the feed. For example, I've got this in the facebook importer: http://www.milk-hub.net/blog/feed?utm_source=facebook.

Next step is to track when people read the articles.

Downtime

Sorry to anyone who tried to access MilkHub over the past few days, we had a power cut whilst I was away last week and it seems to have knocked redtop a little. I've done a backup of the affected disk and redtop seems to be running okay for now. I'll be replacing the disk when I can afford a new one, though hopefully the website will have moved by then.

MilkHub 2008 Design

After just over a year of being live I've finally got around to making my own design for MilkHub and what a better time to switch than after CSS Naked Day!?

CSS Naked Day 2008

As with last year, MilkHub will be joining hundreds of other websites and getting naked on Wednesday (9th April). Last year over 1600 sites took part, a massive increase from the 750 the year before! I'll be removing all stylesheets for the day and going one step further by disabling all JavaScript too!

MilkHub Fonts

For a couple of days now I've been trying to figure out why MilkHub looks strange on whitetop, so today I decided to get to the bottom of it...

Async Comments

I've been playing with the comment code recently trying to make it a little bit more user friendly and I think I've succeeded! All of the comment actions are done using Asynchronous JavaScript now... this means that the page doesn't reload when you submit a form and when you click on the edit/delete buttons the form is loaded in-line. How cool is that? :o)

A week of updates

Since last weekend MilkHub has been through a bit of a transformation. Mostly internal rewrites of some modules, and a couple of new toys have crept in along the way...

CSS Naked Day 2007

MilkHub will be getting naked on Thursday (5th April) along with potentially hundreds of other site owners. Over 750 sites took part last year!

Why?

It's all to show off website accessibility. A user should be able to use your website with no styles on, essentially what a blind user would see (or hear).

How do I get involved?

If you want to show your interest head over to the CSS Naked Day website and signup. Then on Thursday turn off all of the stylesheets on your site for 24 hours.

MilkHub's first month

It's only been three weeks since my first blog post and already MilkHub has a working Blog, a Gallery with photos and a handful of Members. The Last.fm feed and Fortune code have already been through two revisions. And yet I've still managed to fit in my exams! Oh and I must not forget the constant stream of CSS updates. I wander what the next month will hold.

P.S. If something doesn't look right, try reloading the page a few times, that'll probably fix it!

MilkHub is born

I don't know why, but I've decided to move away from web-milk.co.uk and toward milk-hub.net. I'm sure I'll find a way to include my many milk.co.uk domains in the site somehow. And who knows, in a few years time I might move back to using web-milk.co.uk.

I'd like to thank Lavalamp (again) for giving me a hand with tweaking the stylesheet. And I should throw in a thanks to styleshout for the base stylesheet. Oh, and I can't forget cuttlefish who have created the framework that this site is powered by.
