How-to: Music video style notifications for iTunes

Over the past two years of using Macs I've picked up so many little things that I take for granted and it's only recently since a friend has got a new macbook pro that I've started to remember some of them. Each track I play in iTunes appears at the bottom of the screen in a music video style notification like this...

Music video style notification

I've been using last.fm for 3 years and they have a nice small app called iScrobbler which sits in your system tray area, each time the track changes it sends a Growl notification. You can customise the look and feel of each different Growl notification your system uses and this is how I get music video popups.

  1. First make sure you have Growl installed (have a look in system preferences for a Growl item if you're not sure).
  2. Then download, install (copy to Applications) and lauch iScrobbler. When it runs it'll register itself with Growl (this is important)
  3. Open the Growl preference pane (via System Preferences)
  4. Choose the "Applications" tab and locate iScrobbler on the list. Double click (or single click and click configure) to get the options up for iScrobbler.
  5. Select the "Notifications" tab and pick the "Track Change" notification from the list.
  6. Finally, choose the "Music Video" display style and close the window.

Now when you're playing music you should get a cool pop-up at the bottom of the screen :)

Another good add-on to iTunes is http://coversutra.com.
I use it all the time now. It also ties in with growl, and it has last.fm scrobbling built in to it.
