Browser Navigation

The HTML Spec has long defined a way of linking documents together. Using rel and rev attributes on links you can tell the browser where other related documents are, including the first, previous, next and last in a series. You can also link to alternative versions (by medium: RSS, Atom, PDF; and by language).

Whenever I output pagination on a page I add these rel attributes in the hope that someone will be making use of them. For example, I know it helps Opera find the correct fast-forward link. Opera also has had a toolbar that lists these links allowing you fast access to them all. I recently found a couple of plug-ins for Firefox that give the same functionality but I cannot seem to find a solution for Safari.

I have created some bookmarklets that sit in the Safari bookmark toolbar and allow you to use the first, previous, next and last links. Check out my bookmarklets here. However this is not ideal, these bookmarklets can always be clicked on and only include a handful of the many possible links that can be embedded within a page. I would like to create a plug-in for Safari but I have no idea where to get started. Any pointers most welcome!

I have also noticed when testing out these bookmarklets that Google search does not have rel attributes on their next links. I wander how many other sites out there are missing them out?
