Tesco Value Webcam
Over the weekend I gave redtop a once over and decided to install Kubuntu on there. While I was rummaging around for parts I found an old webcam which I plugged in and to my surprise Kubuntu recognised it and stashed it in /dev. I hunted around for some software to make use of the cam and found a package called Motion. Motion allows you to setup your Video4Linux (V4L) device as a webcam and has some nifty motion detection features too. Sadly I found that the webcam I had found was not much use, although it displayed a picture it was very distorted and not at all clear.
Today in Tesco I had a look at the webcams and found the Tesco Value Webcam. At only £6.72 I figured that if it didn't work it wasn't a big deal! But I needn't have worried, Kubuntu picked it up straight away and Motion was able to start playing with it too! Here are a couple of snapshots from the camera whilst we were playing tonight...
I'll be having a play with all the options in Motion to see it can really do. We might yet have a few more cameras around the house ![]()
